City Bass preamp uses vacuum tubes

The power amplifier is equipped with a Class-D amplifier.

This has resulted in a lightweight design weighing just 6.5 kg yet capable of producing 600W of output.

Why didn't they use vacuum tubes in the power amplifier?

  • Solving the fatal problem of bass tube amps

    One of the drawbacks of vacuum tube bass amplifiers is the weight of the power transformer and output transformer. This makes the amplifier head weigh over 30kg. Shinohara, who is still an active guitar technician, often saw musicians carrying heavy bass amplifiers.

    - If only there was a bass amp that was lighter and could produce the sound I wanted -

  • The tone of a bass amp is determined by the preamp section

    In bass amplifiers, the power amp section can produce a good vacuum tube-like sound even if it is not a vacuum tube. To put it simply, the tone is created in the preamp section. The power amp section is the bridge that amplifies the tone and drives the speakers.

    Guitar amps often use vacuum tubes in the power amp section to create a distorted sound, so it is preferable for them to be vacuum tubes. However, it is overwhelmingly better for the power amp section of a bass amp to not produce distortion.
